Position: Full-time Movement and Middle School Athletics Teacher

General Description of Position
The Movement and Middle School Athletics Teacher for Grades 1-8 is responsible for delivering a
comprehensive movement and physical education program that adheres to Waldorf educational principles.
This role includes teaching movement classes for lower grades and athletics for middle school students,
fostering physical development, coordination, teamwork, and a love for physical activity. The teacher will
create a dynamic and engaging curriculum that integrates games, exercises, and sports, promoting the
physical, social, and emotional growth of students.
Authority
CWS Movement/Athletics teacher has the authority to:
● Develop and implement a comprehensive movement and athletics curriculum for Grades 1-8.
● Plan and conduct movement and athletics lessons that align with Waldorf principles.
● Assess and document student progress in physical skills, teamwork and fitness.
● Communicate with parents regarding student progress and athletics schedule.
● Maintain a safe and organized environment for movement and athletics activities.
● Participate in school events, festivals, and faculty meetings.

● Maintain professional boundaries with students, parents, and colleagues.
● Respect the confidentiality of student information.
● Collaborate with class teachers to ensure a cohesive educational experience.
Responsibilities
- Program Management: Develop and implement a diverse range of cooperative games for Grades 1 – 5 and athletic programs and activities for Grades 6-8.
- Assessment: Evaluate student progress and performance through a variety of assessment methods. Prepare progress reports for mid-year and end-of-year reports and participate in two parent-teacher conferences per school year.
- Coach/Referee Recruitment and Supervision: Recruit, hire, train, and supervise volunteer coaches for Middle School sports, ensuring that they adhere to school policies and standards of conduct. Setup and confirm referees for “home” games a month before the season starts and confirm each game the day before.
- Scheduling: Coordinate athletic schedules, including practices, games, and tournaments, while ensuring equitable access to facilities and resources for all teams. This also includes annual activities such as the 5th grade Pentathlon, the 6th grade Medieval Games, and other events such as Parent/Student pick up games. Manage cancellations due to inclement weather for “home” games.
- Budget Management: Develop and manage the movement and athletic department budget, allocating funds for equipment, uniforms, referees, travel expenses, and other program needs. Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications coordinator to collect fees through Blackbaud.
- Facility/Equipment Oversight: Collaborate with maintenance technician to maintain safe and well-equipped athletic facilities, including fields, equipment, and storage. Properly care for and inspect equipment and replace/repair as needed and as the budget allows.
- Student Support: Provide guidance and support to Middle School student-athletes, helping them balance academic responsibilities with athletic commitments and fostering a positive and supportive team culture. Assist in transportation and organizing carpools for students to and from games.
- Parent Communication: Communicate regularly with parents regarding team schedules, program updates, and opportunities for parent involvement and support. This includes collaboration with the Marketing and Communications coordinator to ensure that the athletics calendar and updates are set up properly in Blackbaud.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with all league regulations, eligibility requirements, and safety protocols, including the completion of necessary paperwork and certifications. This includes concussion protocols certification and other relevant courses for all coaching staff.
- Community Engagement: Cultivate positive relationships with community partners, neighboring schools, and local sports organizations to enhance opportunities for student participation and collaboration.
- Event Coordination: Coordinate logistics games, special events, and fundraisers, collaborating with staff, volunteers, and external vendors as needed.
Accountability
- Report to the Program Director.
- Participate in regular performance evaluations and feedback sessions.
- Stay up-to-date with required training, including Red Cross/CPR First Aid certification/Medicine
- Administration training, mandated reporter training, etc.
- Maintain a working knowledge of the School’s Safety Plan and the emergency procedures contained therein.
- Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school community events.
- Ensure compliance with all school policies and educational standards.
- Work collaboratively with the Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff to uphold the mission and vision of the Charlottesville Waldorf School.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Education, or a related field.
- Waldorf Spacial Dynamics certification or willingness to pursue certification.
- Proven experience teaching physical education and athletics to students in a Waldorf or alternative educational setting.
- Strong proficiency in physical education and athletics activities..
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Passion for Waldorf education and a commitment to holistic child development.
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive school culture.

Remuneration:
- Base Salary: $34,500 annually plus applicable increments, based on certification, degrees and experience.
- Tuition reduction: 50% for up to three children, with a 10% increase each year of employment up to 90% (incremental increases do not apply to Early Childhood students)
- Benefits: $3,000 health care stipend per year
- Leave/Sick Days: 10 days
