General Description of Position

The Woodworking Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging and hands-on woodworking instruction to
students in grades 4 through 8, fostering creativity, skill development, and a deep appreciation for
craftsmanship in our students.

Authority

CWS Woodworking Teacher has the authority to:
● Develop and implement a comprehensive woodworking curriculum for Grades 4-8.
● Plan and conduct woodworking lessons and projects that align with Waldorf principles.
● Assess and document student progress and skill development.
● Communicate with parents regarding student progress and classroom activities.
● Maintain a safe and organized woodworking studio, ensuring all tools and materials are properly used and stored.
● Participate in school events, festivals, and faculty meetings. Attend faculty meetings and workdays according to the school calendar.

● Follow school policies and guidelines.
● Maintain professional boundaries with students, parents, and colleagues.
● Respect the confidentiality of student information.
● Collaborate with class teachers to integrate woodworking lessons with the overall curriculum.
● Communicate all student and parent concerns to the class teacher in a timely and professional manner.

Responsibilities

● Curriculum Development: Design and develop a comprehensive woodworking curriculum that aligns with Waldorf educational principles and meets the developmental needs of students in grades 4 through 8.
● Instruction: Deliver dynamic and interactive woodworking lessons that engage students and cultivate their technical skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
● Safety Protocols: Implement and enforce strict safety protocols in the woodworking studio to ensure the well-being of students and maintain a safe working environment.
● Tool Proficiency: Instruct students on the proper use of woodworking tools and equipment, emphasizing safety procedures and best practices.
● Material Selection: Source and procure high-quality materials for woodworking projects, ensuring that they align with Waldorf principles and promote sustainability and environmental consciousness.
● Project Management: Manage woodworking projects from conception to completion, providing guidance and support to students throughout the entire process.
● Assessment: Evaluate student progress and performance through a variety of assessment methods, including project presentations, skill demonstrations, and written reflections. Prepare progress reports for mid-year and end-of-year reports and participate in two parent-teacher conferences per school year.
● Community Engagement: Foster strong partnerships with parents, colleagues, and the wider community to promote the importance of woodworking education and its integration into the Waldorf curriculum.

Accountability

● Report to the Program Director.
● Participate in regular performance evaluations and feedback sessions.
● Stay up-to-date with required training, including Red Cross/CPR First Aid certification/Medicine Administration training, mandated reporter training, etc.
● Maintain a working knowledge of the School’s Safety Plan and the emergency procedures contained therein.
● Attend faculty meetings, professional development sessions, and school community events.
● Ensure compliance with all school policies and educational standards.
● Work collaboratively with the Board of Trustees, faculty, and staff to uphold the mission and vision of the Charlottesville Waldorf School.

Education and Experience Requirements

● Bachelor’s degree in Education, Fine Arts, Woodworking, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
● Waldorf Teacher Certification or willingness to pursue Waldorf professional development opportunities..
● Proven experience teaching woodworking to students in a Waldorf or alternative educational setting.
● Strong knowledge of woodworking techniques, tools, and materials.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
● Passion for Waldorf education and a commitment to holistic child development.
● Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive school culture.

Duration: school year from September through June; plus Faculty Work Days
Work Hours: Part-time specialty teachers are required to be on campus for the duration of their class periods, in addition to after-school faculty meetings and Work Week trainings and meetings.

Remuneration

Wage/Salary: Part-time Specialty teachers receive a prorated salary based on the starting full-time salary of $34,500.
Benefits for part-time Specialties:
○ Leave/sick days: 6 days
○ Tuition Reduction: 50% for one child, with a 10% increase each year of employment up to 90% (incremental increases do not apply to Early Childhood students)
